About Us
Sweet Sunshine Communitea Cafe was opened by Sabrina on June 1, 2012, run out of the same building as the CHCR, Killaloe Community Radio Station. Sabrina has been food and community minded ever since growing up helping to raise her siblings, one of whom suffered from juvenile diabetes and required a special diet. She has been involved with keeping the Killaloe farmer's market growing and thriving (in partnership with Lynn Postil) for the past three years. It is from farmers at the market that Sabrina gathers the ingredients for her cafe meals each week, in the summer months. The cafe menu changes daily, reflecting seasonal produce and also a propensity to keep things fresh and creative. The 'communitea' part of Sweet Sunshine cafe really comes into play when we have customers drop in with bags and armloads full of extra produce from their gardens, that get incorporated into the day's menu. Another important part of being a hub for the community, is that our cafe is family-friendly - we welcome our younger patrons by providing a children's area. The coffee we serve at the cafe often causes people to exclaim, "this is gooood coffee!" It is also good for the earth - we buy from Birds & Beans, a company that is not only certified organic, fair trade and Rainforest Alliance certified, but also bird friendly, providing habitat for migratory birds! When the cafe is hopping with customers that all seem to know each others' name, filling up on delicious food that makes them feel good, we feel we are fulfilling our purpose.

We use organic spelt flour to make our baked goods. Many of our sweets contain exclusively local maple syrup; otherwise we use organic cane sugar. Our gluten free cookies are made with organic brown rice flour which has a shortbread-like texture. Our entrees, soups and stews are made with mostly organic and local (when available) ingredients.

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
Sabrina aims to provide healthy choices to customers. Our baked goods, entrees, soups and stews are made in our inspected kitchen in the cafe. Our ingredients are also healthy for the earth as a whole. We use mostly organic produce, which means less chemicals added to the soil and water on our behalf, and less chemicals in our bodies. All of our products are vegetarian. We try to complete the natural cycle by donating our kitchen wastes to feed local pigs and composting our coffee grounds.

Supporting local, sustainable agriculture is so important to us and the OVFC makes it remarkably easy to do so. It’s wonderful that we have the chance to reconnect with the community that we know and love even though we’re no longer living right in the valley.  The Co-op is one of the things we miss most about Renfrew County, so I was more than delighted to learn that you were adding a pick-up location in Ottawa.
